Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima told that dedicated game platforms remain Nintendo’s chief preoccupation

“NX [the codename for Nintendo’s next game system] is in development,” says Kimishima, reaffirming that Nintendo will have more to say about it next year, and calling it “a next step in our dedicated device strategy, the core and primary focus of our business.”
And he says NX is definitely a departure from the Wii and Wii U

“As far as NX goes, I’ve said it’s different and obviously a new experience,” he tells me. “If you look back to the beginning of our conversation today, we talked about the transition from Wii hardware to the Wii U hardware and how difficult it is to explain to the consumer base what is different and new about the new hardware. It’s difficult to convince them to switch from their current platform to the next platform.”

“That being said, I can assure you we’re not building the next version of Wii or Wii U. It’s something unique and different. It’s something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base.”
But where the codename “NX” comes from turns out to be a mystery

“As for the codename NX, I don’t believe that there’s any real meaning behind it, and to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where it came from,” says Kimishima, laughing when I ask. “Or perhaps Mr. Iwata had meant to tell me and then never got the chance.”

Nou, dat sluit een Zelda U poort naar NX dus uit... als het inderdaad zo'n volledig ander ding zal zijn, zal de game die specifiek van de grond af opgebouwd is om optimaal de besturing van de Wii U te integreren wel niet makkelijk te porten zijn... tenzij ze weer knopjes voor 't schudden van een controller gaan vervangen in de nieuwe console.

Nintendo has filed a patent application for shared computing incentives


a supplemental computing device configured to detachably couple to the game console via the physical communication interface, the supplemental computing device comprising: one or more processors configured to provide, over the physical communication interface, processing resources to the game console to assist the game console in locally executing the game;

The really interesting thing is that Nintendo may be looking to use the raw power of these supplemental devices to help stabilize its network in some way. Further down the patent listing, a paragraph mentions that users may be compensated in some way if they agree to allow their supplemental device to assist in computations for others on the network.

In some instances, a user may be compensated based on an amount (e.g., time, raw resources, etc.) that the user shares his or her supplemental computing device or indicates that he or she is willing to share the supplemental computing device. This compensation may comprise any form of value, include access (e.g., time) to other supplemental computing devices maintained by other users, discounts on games, access to certain game content, points for redemption for digital or physical goods, information for display (e.g., as a badge) on a social network, or the like.

Volgens mij heeft Nintendo daar een patent op sinds de N64, correct me if i'm wrong.

Ligt eraan of de NX backwards compatibility krijgt, en dat is lastig te zeggen.
Als dat patent enige indicatie is, en de nieuwe controller ook een scherm heeft, is er wel enige kans dat dat zo is.

Tja wanneer heeft het zin om iets te kopen.. Dat weet je alleen zelf. Ga je er plezier van hebben als je 'm koopt, ja dat zeker. Bovendien is er nergens officieel gezegd dat de NX volgend jaar al in de winkels ligt dus ik zou maar niet te hard van stapel lopen.

De Wii U heeft genoeg mooie games om je minstens tot aan de release van de NX bezig te houden, wanneer dat dan ook mag zijn.
