Robin Williams was a fan of the Japanese anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) and specifically asked to have a model from the series incorporated as part of the film, in which the boxed toy was borrowed from Williams' own personal collection. The model itself, contrary to Jake's explanation that the action figure is a hero character, as it appears to be an unintelligent, creature-like antagonist from the adult-oriented Original Video Animation (OVA) ending to the series, Shin seiki Evangelion Gekijô-ban: Air/Magokoro wo, kimi ni (1997), some anime fans would point out from Jake's inaccurate quote "he's a good guy, he can fly, and he's got a silver sword that can kill bad guys", which best describes Trunks from another famous Japanese anime franchise entitled Dragon Ball Z (1989 - 1996).
