Doet me veel denken aan Carmageddon.

I'll admit that I'm a little shocked. When I first saw video of Blood Drive and then saw the box -- boasting statements such as "Brains, Stains & Automobiles!" -- I thought this was going to be a bad game, but after playing for a while, I can tell you it isn't. It's just a rather boring and poorly put together game.

Think of Blood Drive as Twisted Metal with zombies and no story whatsoever. This is vehicular combat where the maps are packed with the undead. Some modes have you focusing on splattering zombie brains everywhere, others want you to clear checkpoints, and sometimes you need to take out the other racers. As you pop J-turns in your rusted out ambulance or armored big rig, you'll find a plethora of weapons and power-ups to use on the battlefield.

But the game never really got my engine running.

Each of Blood Drive's racers has a custom ride all his or her own. Jackson's "Moonshiner" is a muscle car armored out the wazoo, Bedlam's "Doom Buggy" is fast as hell but isn't well-protected, and so on. Trouble is I never found any of them to control that well. There are definitely differences to the rides, but I always found myself spinning out of control or getting really screwed up from catching just a little bit of air.

Now, that might sound like just a little annoyance I should get over, but some of the modes here require you to be pretty precise. King of the Skull is a game where the only way to win is to be the driver who held onto the golden skull the longest. To get it, you have to ram your opponents. But when you can barely drive in a straight line, getting into a situation where you can ram effectively and get away is tough. Similarly, checkpoint races can be frustrating when the cone of light you're trying to get to is on an elevated platform that requires some tight turns to climb up.

When the goal is simply to kill as many zombies as possible or destroy your opponents, the game works OK, but it's nothing special. There are speed boosts and "drunk missiles" that shoot off in every direction but nothing's all that impressive. Before every race or event, you get to pick a weapon loadout that gives you special abilities such as more boost or double ammo. It's a nice touch but doesn't add much depth.

Blood Drive is meant to be a multiplayer experience -- the single-player lacks a story and just sets you against computer opponents in matches that are the same as the multiplayer ones. But in my testing time, no one is playing online. You can start sessions and play with the computer until someone else joins, but I never saw that happen.

On a technical level, Blood Drive has issues but it's not a disaster or anything. The framerate dips here and there and the graphics aren't topnotch. The textures are bland, the zombies clip through stuff, and the action is never crazy intense. The game is colorful, but the post-apocalyptic environments aren't anything you haven't seen before.

Perhaps the biggest problem here is that Blood Drive is trying to be edgy just for the sake of being edgy. The game has some really annoying voice overs and uses them to curse at weird points that don't require the F-word. Similarly, you'll see the game drop in a swear during loading screens. I'm no stick in the mud, but theses antics just seem juvenile and out of place. The game feels goofy and light-hearted, so the attempt to be crass just doesn't work for me.
Closing Comments
In the end, Blood Drive is just some generic cars running over some ho-hum zombies. The controls could be tighter and no one seems to be playing online, but the game succeeds at giving you a license to run over the undead. It just isn't that exciting.

IGN Ratings for Blood Drive (PS3)
Rating(out of 10 )Description

5.0 Presentation
The game's colorful and easy to get around, but the lack of a story and the desperate attempt at edginess is annoying.

6.0 Graphics
The environments all look the same and zombies aren't stunning. Still, there's enough stuff going on the screen that it doesn't look terrible.

5.0 Sound
The voiceovers are really grating and just spout nonsense. Car noises and such are fine but forgettable.

5.5 Gameplay
I was bored. You're just driving around, shooting stuff and occasionally spinning out. Rinse and repeat.

5.0 Lasting Appeal
I couldn't find online matches. There are a few cups to play through, but I know that I didn't want to.

5.5 OVERALL
Mediocre
